Shy-bearing Malbec vines produce fruit of great concentration in the warm climate of the Alexander Valley. Harvested in September, fruit from this small vineyard block was fermented for seven days in one of our many small capacity fermentors.
After the bright crimson color, the wine opens with vivid notes of raspberry, blueberry and freshly turned earth. Accents of spicy, sweet oak follow. The red fruits, oak, and tannins combine to form a multilayered texture on the palate. Further bottle maturation will result in additional marrying of the components.
A daily pumpover regime and careful cap management produced a wine of great structure. The wine was aged for 18 months in 100% French oak barrels to gain additional structure as well as to complement the Bordelaise origin of the varietal. This wine was also used as a portion of the blend in our 2006 Reserve Alexandre, Meritage. Malbec is delightful as a multilayered sipping wine or as an accompaniment to fine cheeses.
