The Merlot for this wine grows and thrives in the gravely benchland soils of the J & J Fay Ranch located in the heart of the Alexander Valley. The vines in this warm climate produce fruit of great depth and the deep ruby red color is testament to the small berries and concentration achieved in this vineyard. Harvested in September, fruit from this small vineyard block was fermented in one of our many small capacity fermentors.
This Merlot was fermented on skins for eight days and during this time a daily pumpover regime and careful cap management produced a wine of great structure. The wine was then aged for an additional 18 months in new and used French oak barrels. Only 30% new oak was employed; the remainder was an even mixture of 2 and 3-year old oak. This wine pairs well with baked or roasted meats and grilled vegetables. - Mick Schroeter
