The Merlot for this wine grows and thrives in the gravely benchland soils of the J & J Fay Ranch located in the heart of the Alexander Valley. The vines in this warm climate produce fruit of great depth and the deep ruby red color is testament to the small berries and concentration achieved in this vineyard. Harvested in September, fruit from this small vineyard block was fermented in one of our many small capacity fermentors.
Our Block Collection Merlot was cold-soaked for three days to extract the gorgeous red fruit flavors and vibrant aromatics for which the varietal is known. Twice daily pump overs coaxed phenomenal color from the skins and built a solid foundation of tannin to complement the luscious fruit. After being drained off skins the wine was immediately put to barrel where it aged for 22 months in new and seasoned French oak barrels.
