This Viognier is grown on the Trione Family’s River Road Ranch, a riverside vineyard in the Russian River Valley. This appellation is on average, cooler than the rest of the county, thanks to the extensive fog that rolls in from the Pacific Ocean and lies like a thick blanket over the region in the mornings. Only a small amount of the appellation’s vines are planted to Viognier.
After hand-picking in the cool morning hours the fruit was gently whole cluster pressed and transferred to neutral French oak barrel for fermentation. The four months of maturation in contact with its lees enhances the texture and complexity of the wine’s mouthfeel while adding very little oak influence. This is a delightful summer picnic wine and pairs beautifully with shellfish. – Mick Schroeter
Viognier is notable for its intense aromatics and enticing complexity of rich fruit balanced by crisp acidity. The varietal gained fame in Condrieu in the Northern Rhone Valley and has since found success in the cooler regions of California as well. Our 2009 vintage opens with an opulent fragrance of honeysuckle and almond blossom that unfolds to flavors of white peach and ripe apricot fruit. A stony minerality strikes a compelling chord and adds a lively backbone to this stylish wine.
