HEALDSBURG, CA March 14, 2018- Geyser Peak winery is pleased to announce the appointment of a new winemaker, Randy Meyer. A Santa Rosa native, Randy has over 30 years’ experience in the Northern California wine industry.
Randy’s interest in winemaking began at a young age when his father, a local Santa Rosa pediatrician, received some Muscat vines from an Italian family in the area. Intrigued by the possibility of making their own wine, they built a small cellar into a hill on their property and started production. When the time came for Randy for college, Randy continued to pursue his love of winemaking at UC Davis as a fermentation major. During his studies, he interned at Piper Sonoma and Far Niente before spending 23 years with Korbel and, most recently, Draxton wine.
Randy is excited to lead the winemaking team at Geyser Peak. Having grown up in the area, he understands the history and significance of the brand in Sonoma County. Randy was thrilled by the opportunity to become part of the Geyser Peak team and to carry the winery’s legacy forward. Alongside Geyser Peak’s Alexander Valley Cabernets, he is most looking forward to working with the Sauvignon Blanc. This is a hallmark of the Geyser Peak range on the white side, and a variety around which the brand has a long and notable history. Randy appreciates the challenge of making Sauvignon Blanc into great wine, as this grape often has a finicky nature. He feels a great sense of accomplishment when he can create a pure, crisp Sauvignon Blanc wine to enjoy on a warm day.
Founded in 1880 as California’s 29th bonded winery, Geyser Peak has been at the forefront of quality wine production since its earliest days. Originally located across from Geyser Peak Mountain, the winery commanded a view of the thermal steam clouds that billowed from the mountain summit. In this special place, geothermal activity created the diverse soil profiles that make this region so exceptionally well suited to wine grape cultivation.
Today, from the new winery location in Dry Creek Valley, Geyser Peak’s winemakers are carrying the winery’s rich history forward and staking an exciting claim on the future. The winery’s philosophy is the same today as it was more than a century ago: Craft high-quality wines that capture the true essence of California’s diverse regions. Geyser Peak offers a distinctive portfolio accessible to new and experienced consumers and is renowned for its aromatic white wines and rich reds.
